Asiedu Nketiah Steps Down

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah will not seek another term in office, paving the way for a new leader to emerge from the party’s upcoming national executive elections.

His decision comes as preparations intensify for the internal polls, with five individuals reportedly positioning themselves to contest the chairmanship.

The development has also sparked discussions about Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s political future, particularly the possibility of him seeking the party’s presidential nomination ahead of the 2027 flagbearership contest. However, no formal announcement of such an intention was contained in the report.

Nominations for the NDC’s national executive positions closed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Reports indicate that 137 aspirants obtained nomination forms to compete for various leadership positions within the party.

According to information published by Graphic Online, the race to succeed Mr Asiedu Nketiah is expected to feature five contenders with varying levels of experience in party administration and public service.

They are former Odododiodoo Member of Parliament Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashietey, former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, National Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka, and former Minister of Local Government Akwasi Opong-Fosu.

Mr Ofosu Ampofo has also emerged among the potential candidates following reports that some party members collected nomination forms on his behalf.

The chairmanship contest is expected to be a significant test of the NDC’s internal democratic processes as members prepare to elect leaders who will guide the party’s organisational affairs and political activities.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s decision not to pursue another term marks a notable development in the party’s leadership transition. His next political steps may attract attention, particularly as discussions surrounding the NDC’s future presidential candidate continue to develop.

For now, the priority remains the forthcoming national executive elections, which will determine who assumes responsibility for leading the party as national chairman.

With five aspirants reportedly in contention, attention is expected to shift towards the candidates’ campaigns, their support bases within the party, and the strategies they will adopt to secure the position.
