Are They Not NDC Members – Ghanaians React To COCOBOD’s Sponsored UK Trip For Cocoa Farmers
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has come under heavy criticism following a sponsored trip for National Best Cocoa Farmers to the United Kingdom.
In a post shared on its official platforms, COCOBOD disclosed that a group of National Best Cocoa Farmers, accompanied by some officials of the Board, are currently in the United Kingdom on a trip to major cocoa-related establishments.
According to COCOBOD, the team visited Cadbury World in Birmingham, England, to gain first-hand insight into chocolate production and the global value of cocoa.
The Board explained that the visit is part of its annual incentive package for distinguished cocoa farmers aimed at motivating them to work harder to increase cocoa production.
The visit also gave the farmers an opportunity to interact with officials of Cadbury for their collective benefits. The farmers’ interactions highlighted Ghana’s important role in supplying quality cocoa to the global market, COCOBOD stated.
The announcement has triggered mixed reactions on social media, with many Ghanaians questioning the timing and relevance of the trip.
While some have described the initiative as a waste of public funds at a time when cocoa farmers are complaining about low producer prices and delayed payments for their produce, others have alleged political bias in the selection of beneficiaries.
Some critics also argued that the funds used for the UK trip could have been channeled into providing farming inputs, fertilizers, and better incentives at home to directly support cocoa production.
