ANC Makes Decision on Gwede Mantashe After Controversial TV Interview Remarks
The African National Congress (ANC) is discussing the conduct of its national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, following controversial remarks he made when questioned about allegations of sexual favours being demanded in exchange for jobs. The issue has attracted attention within the party, with calls for Mantashe to apologise and face possible disciplinary action.
According to reports, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the matter was being discussed within the organisation. However, he did not reveal what action the party might take against Mantashe or whether a formal disciplinary process would follow.
The controversy began when Mantashe was questioned by a Newsroom Afrika journalist about allegations that a municipal councillor had demanded sexual favours from women seeking employment. In his response, Mantashe argued that such behaviour should be treated as the misconduct of an individual rather than something involving the ANC as a whole.
However, his choice of words sparked criticism, particularly from the ANC Women’s League, which described his remarks as inappropriate and inconsistent with the party’s commitment to equality and respect for women.
The ANC Women’s League called on Mantashe to issue a public apology to the journalist and the public. It also urged the ANC leadership to reprimand him and consider internal disciplinary action over what it described as repeated disrespectful remarks towards women.
Mantashe later responded to the criticism during an interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). He said he was willing to apologise but questioned what exactly he was expected to apologise for. He maintained that the Women’s League had not directly approached him to explain its concerns.
His response has added to the ongoing debate about how political leaders should address allegations of sexual exploitation and communicate with journalists.
The ANC’s handling of the matter is now attracting attention as the party faces questions about accountability and the behaviour expected from its senior leaders. While the discussions continue, it remains unclear what final decision the organisation will make regarding Mantashe.
