Amoanda chief expresses satisfaction with Ibrahim Mahama’s management of Damang mine

The Chief of Amoanda, Nana Kofi Ngoro II, has expressed satisfaction with the management of Damang Gold Mine under Ibrahim Mahama’s Engineers and Planners (E&P), saying the company is delivering on assurances made during the transition.

He said community members were initially apprehensive about the change in ownership and management, fearing they could lose their jobs and livelihoods.

However, he said assurances that existing workers would be retained had eased their concerns and restored confidence in the new management.

“We were initially scared when we heard about the transition because we feared we were going to lose our jobs and livelihoods. But thankfully, we were assured of employment, which made us relieved,” Nana Ngoro II said.

Speaking on a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen in Tarkwa-Damang, he said the new management had also pledged to work closely with traditional authorities to implement development initiatives for communities around the mine.

He disclosed that plans for a hospital and other social interventions had been discussed with the chiefs, adding that the communities had agreed on arrangements to facilitate the implementation of the projects.

Nana Ngoro II urged residents to support Mr Mahama and remain united to promote development in the area.

“We can boldly say that all that he promised us, he is working on them. So, I urge community members to support Ibrahim Mahama and be united as a community to ensure that we progress,” he said.

The Gyasihene of Amoanda, Nana Kofi Anyam, also commended the new management, saying it had honoured its commitment not to dismiss workers following the transition.

He said the company had also begun addressing some of the community’s infrastructure needs, including road development, while other social interventions, such as the proposed astroturf, remained part of the commitments made to residents.

“Since the transition, Ibrahim Mahama assured us that he would not dismiss the former workers, and indeed, he has kept his word. He is working and has delivered on most of the things he assured us of during the transition,” Nana Anyam said.

The two traditional leaders expressed optimism about the mine’s future and called for continued cooperation between the company and host communities to advance development.
