Abronye Recieves Sad News Again

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has rejected another application by Bono Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, seeking to suspend a defamation case filed against him and Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited by lawyer and journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini.

The three-member appellate panel, presided over by Justice Eric Baah, dismissed the application on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The court also ordered Abronye to pay GH¢10,000 in costs.

The application sought to suspend proceedings at the Kumasi High Court while an interlocutory appeal was being considered. The latest decision means the substantive case can proceed, although other pending legal matters may remain unresolved.

The dispute stems from a lawsuit filed by Anyenini in April 2025 over statements allegedly broadcast on Wontumi TV and Radio. The broadcasts reportedly included allegations that the journalist was dishonest and corrupt and had received US$50,000 to use his Newsfile programme to discredit Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, a Member of Parliament.

Anyenini has denied the allegations and is seeking damages and other reliefs from Abronye, Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited and the media company’s programme host, Kwaku Kyeremanteng Nkansah.

The allegations are yet to be determined by the court, and the latest ruling does not establish whether the statements complained of were defamatory.

Abronye’s attempts to halt the proceedings have encountered several legal setbacks. In November 2025, the Kumasi High Court declined to strike out the lawsuit, although it directed a reassessment of the filing fees. The court rejected his other procedural objections.

He subsequently returned to the High Court to challenge the continuation of the case, citing alleged non-compliance with the earlier order. That application was dismissed in April 2026, with the court directing the defendants to file the necessary processes within 14 days.

Abronye later sought a stay of proceedings pending an appeal, but the High Court rejected that request in May 2026. His latest application before the Court of Appeal has now also been dismissed.

Meanwhile, Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited has reportedly approached Anyenini to explore an amicable settlement on behalf of the company and its programme host.

The latest decision addresses the request to suspend the proceedings and does not amount to a final judgment on the defamation claims. The substantive action is therefore expected to continue before the Kumasi High Court.
