No fewer than 500 people have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by Friends of Barrister Sharafadeen Alli (BSA) at Bodija Market in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The statewide medical outreach was flagged off on Thursday at Saka Gbadamosi Hall, Bodija Market, with beneficiaries receiving free medical screenings and drugs.

One of the coordinators of the group, Barrister Luqman Adekunle Olaoye, said the initiative was aimed at complementing the healthcare efforts of Senator Sharafadeen Alli and demonstrating the kind of people-oriented programmes he would pursue if elected governor of Oyo State.

Speaking on the motivation behind the outreach, Olaoye said: “The programme which is being organised under the auspices of Friends of Barrister Sharafadeen Alli, is aimed at complementing the aspirations and good work of the distinguished senator.

“He is someone who wishes the people of Oyo State well and is passionate about improving their healthcare. This initiative is intended to fill a gap in the state’s existing healthcare system and demonstrate to the people that, if our candidate eventually emerges victorious, this is an indication of the kind of people-oriented programmes he will embark on and expand with their support.”

He explained that Bodija market was chosen for the flag-off because of its strategic importance and its ability to attract people from different communities across the state.

“Bodija Market attracts people from different ethnic groups and communities across Oyo State. Also, Ibadan North Local Government Area is one of the most prominent local government areas in the state. These factors informed our decision to flag off the programme here,” he said.

Olaoye disclosed that the medical team would conduct blood pressure and blood sugar tests, adding that those found to have either condition would receive drugs free of charge.

He said at least 500 people were expected to benefit from the exercise, which would subsequently be extended to other parts of the state.

On the group’s membership, the lawyer said Friends of Barrister Sharafadeen Alli comprised people from different professional and social backgrounds, including Nigerians living abroad.

He added that some members had contributed financially to the initiative, stressing that the group was solely responsible for funding the programme.

“Nobody else is financing the programme, not even the distinguished senator,” Olaoye said.

He also explained that although the group was primarily established to support Alli’s governorship ambition, it also supported other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The group was primarily formed to support his aspiration. By extension, there is no way we can support him without also supporting others. However, the programme is principally aimed at supporting his aspiration,” he said.

Also speaking, a member of the group, Hon. Abidemi Sanni, urged party members and supporters to mobilise residents in support of APC candidates.

“We embarked on this programme because of Barrister Sharafadeen Alli and all APC candidates. I want to appeal to you to mobilise people, both APC members and non-members, for all APC candidates.

“Let us spread the good news about the APC and bring people into the fold. Let others also enjoy programmes like this,” Sanni said.

In his welcome address, the APC chairman at Bodija Plank Market, Elder Sunday Akinpelu, described the outreach as an initiative aimed at promoting the progress of the party and improving access to healthcare.

“The meeting here is for the progress of the APC. It is when people think about the progress of the party that they organise something like this,” he said.

Akinpelu added that the beneficiaries would undergo medical checks and receive drugs, urging residents to support APC candidates in the 2027 elections.

“Vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Sharafadeen Alli for governor, Remi Oseni for Senate and Umar Farouk Alao for the House of Representatives. Vote for APC candidates. That is when we will enjoy,” he said.

The event was attended by the APC vice chairman at Bodija Plank Market, Alhaji Owolabi Adisa; the market’s APC Public Relations Officer, Mr Adejinmi Oluwaseun; and Hon. Yemi Badru, among others.
