33 Kenyan Banks Reveal The Amount Paid to Government, Workers and Shareholders in 2025

Thirty-three Kenyan banks and microfinance institutions reported distributing a combined KSh402.26 billion to the government, employees and shareholders in 2025, marking an increase from KSh354.54 billion recorded in 2024. The figures are contained in the Kenya Bankers Association’s Total Tax Contribution Report 2025, which examines the sector’s financial contributions to the economy.

The government received the largest share, accounting for 51.11 per cent of the total value distributed. Employees took home 27.75 per cent, while shareholders received 21.15 per cent through dividends. The figures highlight the significant role played by the banking sector in supporting public revenue, employment and investment returns.

Payments to employees increased considerably during the year. Net employee emoluments rose to KSh111.62 billion in 2025 from KSh90.82 billion in 2024, representing an increase of approximately KSh20.8 billion, or 22.9 per cent. Gross wages and salaries also grew from KSh123.21 billion to KSh142.44 billion, reflecting higher overall employment-related payments.

The banking sector’s total tax contribution reached KSh205.58 billion, up from KSh194.81 billion recorded in 2024. Of this amount, KSh98.36 billion represented taxes directly borne by the institutions, while KSh107.22 billion was collected and remitted to the government on behalf of other taxpayers. However, the government’s share of the total value distributed declined from 54.95 per cent in 2024 to 51.11 per cent in 2025.

Shareholders also benefited from improved returns during the reporting period. After-tax dividends increased to KSh85.06 billion in 2025 from KSh68.91 billion in the previous year. Meanwhile, the banks’ combined profit before tax rose by 17.63 per cent, reaching KSh305.95 billion compared with KSh260.09 billion in 2024.

The report provides an overview of how Kenya’s banking industry contributes to public finances, employee earnings and shareholder income. The rise in the total value distributed, alongside increased wages, tax contributions and dividends, points to continued growth in the sector’s financial activity during 2025.
