What Chelsea Plan to Do in the Summer Transfer Window if They Qualify for the UCL
According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Chelsea could pursue a more ambitious transfer strategy next summer if they secure a top-four finish in the Premier League under head coach Xabi Alonso.
The Blues are reportedly considering a move for Real Madrid and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as they look to strengthen their squad with experienced and high-profile players.
Since BlueCo took over Chelsea more than four yeapks ago, the club have largely focused on signing young players with potential rather than established stars. However, journalist Simon Phillips has suggested that qualifying for the Champions League could encourage Chelsea to change their transfer policy and pursue bigger names.
Alexander-Arnold is among the players reportedly being considered for a move to Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old is said to be frustrated by his limited opportunities to start under Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, potentially opening the door for Chelsea to explore a deal.
Chelsea have already demonstrated their willingness to spend heavily in the transfer market. The club reportedly paid £117 million to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa last summer, suggesting that a substantial transfer fee may not necessarily prevent them from pursuing another major signing.
However, the defender’s wages could present a challenge. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over, Chelsea have adopted a different approach to player salaries, favouring lower basic wages supplemented by performance-related bonuses.
According to Capology, Rogers earns approximately £280,000 per week, making him Chelsea’s highest-paid player. Moisés Caicedo reportedly earns £250,000 per week, while captain Reece James receives around £230,000.
Alexander-Arnold is reportedly earning approximately £270,000 per week at Real Madrid. Chelsea would therefore need to determine whether they could accommodate his salary within their existing wage structure, particularly if he expects to maintain his current earnings.
There are also questions over whether signing another right-sided defender would be a priority. Chelsea already have Marco Palestra, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto as options for the right wing-back position in Alonso’s system.
Nevertheless, Gusto’s future could influence Chelsea’s decision-making if he becomes a candidate to leave the club. In that situation, the Blues could reassess their options and consider whether Alexander-Arnold’s quality and experience would provide a significant boost to the squad.
