What 16-Year-Old Nigerian Forward Said After Winning Player of the Match Award

According to a report by FIFA.com on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, 16-year-old Nigerian forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has expressed her excitement after winning the Player of the Match award in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute on Tuesday, finishing a pass from Queen Joseph to give the Flamingos the lead in their Group B encounter.

The Nigerian youngster described the victory as a hard-fought achievement and expressed delight at scoring her first goal at the tournament.

“The game was not easy for us, but we tried our best, and we were able to get the three points today,” Adegbuyi said.

“I’m happy and very excited because this is my first goal in these tournaments, on the biggest stage. I’m very happy to score here, on the biggest stage of my life because this is just the beginning,” she added.

“I promise to make my family and the whole nation proud,” Adegbuyi concluded.

Adegbuyi’s goal proved crucial as Nigeria sought to recover from their 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening match of the competition.

The Flamingos continued to push for a second goal after the break, with Queen Joseph, Tosin Rafiu, and Favour Nkwocha creating opportunities to extend their advantage.

Substitute Precious Oscar eventually sealed the victory in the 90th minute, heading home a cross from Adegbuyi to ensure Nigeria claimed all three points.

The result revived Nigeria’s hopes of progressing from Group B, with the team set to face the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in their next group-stage fixture on Friday, October 23.
