UCL: Super Eagles Star Bags Player Of The Match Award After His Superb Display

According to a report by BBC Sport on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Galatasaray secured a 4-2 victory over Lille in the UEFA Champions League, with striker Victor Osimhen scoring in the second half to help the Turkish side claim all three points, before being named Player of the Match for his performance.

Galatasaray made a flying start at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, taking the lead after just two minutes when Yunus Akgun capitalised on a defensive error by Lille defender Alexsandro before firing into the net.

Lille responded quickly through Soriba Diaoune, who rounded goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir and finished into an empty net after Alexsandro advanced forward and delivered an accurate pass.

The contest remained open, with both teams creating opportunities. Osimhen appeared to have won a penalty for Galatasaray, but the decision was overturned after a review showed that Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer had not fouled the Nigerian striker.

Diaoune then scored his second goal of the match to put Lille ahead, curling the ball into the net after Cakir parried an effort back into the penalty area.

However, Galatasaray restored parity before half-time when Roland Sallai delivered a cross from the right flank, allowing Aleksey Batrakov to head home from close range and make it 2-2.

Galatasaray took control after the break and regained the lead seven minutes into the second half. Lucas Torreira got a touch on a corner, with Ozer failing to prevent the ball from crossing the line at the near post.

Osimhen extended the visitors’ advantage with a powerful finish from the edge of the penalty area, beating Ozer to make it 4-2. The Super Eagles striker kept his celebration muted out of respect for Lille.

The hosts attempted to mount a comeback through several substitutions but could not find a way past Galatasaray’s defence as the Turkish side held on to secure all three points.

The victory ended Galatasaray’s five-match losing run away from home in the Champions League and revived their league-phase campaign. Lille, meanwhile, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in major European competition and remained without a point after three matches.

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution to Galatasaray’s 4-2 victory over Lille.
