Two Anti-Illegal Immigration Campaigners Found Shot Dead in South Africa
Five members of the March and March (MnM) movement were shot yesterday during a protest in Dunoon, Cape Town. The shooting happened at about 12:15 p.m. near the intersection of Potsdam Road and The Stables Road, where a group of demonstrators had gathered.
Police say the victims are three women, aged 40, 42 and 48, and two men, aged 35 and 43. All five were taking part in the demonstration when the shots were fired. A Cape Town leader of the movement said the members had joined the gathering to show support for a march organised by Imbizo Yamadoda.
The leader alleged that suspected extortionists arrived during the protest and opened fire on the crowd. This claim has not been independently confirmed, and it is still not known who fired the shots.
Police have confirmed that the five people were shot but say finding the person responsible may be difficult. According to officers, the injured protesters could not identify the shooter or say which direction the gunfire came from. That leaves several basic questions unanswered, including who carried out the attack, why it happened and whether the protesters were deliberately targeted.
Investigators will need to establish what happened before drawing any conclusions, including whether the movement’s claim about extortionists holds up. No arrests have been reported so far.
The shooting has raised concern about the safety of people who take part in public demonstrations. Peaceful protest is a legal right in South Africa, and community groups and activists should be able to exercise it without fear of violence. For now, attention remains on the police investigation and on finding out who was behind the attack on the Dunoon intersection.
