The Full Story Behind Barcelona’s Failed Pursuit of PSG Superstar in 2024
According to a report by Barca Universal published on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Barcelona began exploring the possibility of signing Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January 2024, when former manager Xavi Hernandez identified the need for a quality left sided attacker to strengthen his squad.
The Catalan club reportedly contacted the winger’s agent, Mamuka Jugeli, as they considered a possible move from Napoli. Kvaratskhelia was believed to be interested in playing in Spain, with Barcelona and Real Madrid among his preferred destinations. However, despite the reported interest from both sides, reaching an agreement with Napoli proved difficult.
Barcelona reportedly found it easier to discuss personal terms with the player than to satisfy Napoli’s financial demands. Kvaratskhelia was earning a relatively modest salary in Italy, while the proposed contract extension from Napoli was said to fall short of his growing reputation and market value.
Napoli reportedly demanded €70 million for the winger and wanted almost the entire transfer fee paid upfront. Barcelona were facing financial restrictions at the time, making it difficult for the club to meet those conditions without first raising additional funds.
Discussions continued in April 2024 as Barcelona assessed whether they could complete the transfer. Sporting director Deco reportedly considered the possibility of selling Raphinha to a Saudi Arabian club to finance the move and create room for Kvaratskhelia in the squad.
However, Barcelona’s plans changed following Xavi’s departure and the appointment of Hansi Flick as manager. Flick viewed Raphinha as an important part of his plans and reportedly convinced the Brazilian to remain at the club.
Raphinha’s decision to stay meant Barcelona lost a potential source of funding for the proposed transfer, making the pursuit of Kvaratskhelia increasingly difficult. The club eventually completed a relatively limited transfer window, signing Dani Olmo and Pau Victor without securing the Georgian winger.
Kvaratskhelia later joined Paris Saint Germain in January 2025 for a reported €80 million, ending his time at Napoli and moving to the French champions.
With reports suggesting that PSG are considering extending his contract until 2031, Barcelona’s earlier interest appears unlikely to lead to a transfer. The winger will now have an opportunity to face the club that once pursued his signature when PSG meet Barcelona in the Champions League.
