The doctors couldn’t really tell – Ameyaw Debrah recounts childhood health struggles

Celebrity blogger Ameyaw Debrah has opened up about the health challenges he experienced during childhood, revealing that he often became too weak to participate in physical education at school.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, Ameyaw said doctors struggled to identify the cause of his condition, although an American doctor once suggested that he might have mild multiple sclerosis.

“The doctors couldn’t really tell. It was only one American doctor at one point who came up with mild multiple sclerosis,” he said.

Ameyaw explained that he frequently fell ill while at school, sometimes requiring hospitalisation. He described the symptoms as tiredness, feeling cold and lacking the energy to carry out activities.

“Sometimes you start Monday and by Friday you are sick, hospitalisation sick,” he recounted.

He added that the condition prevented him from taking part in physical education lessons with his classmates.

“Naturally, I had to be exempt from PE. So while everybody is doing PE, I’m in the classroom,” he said.

However, Ameyaw noted that his condition began to improve during secondary school, although he could not explain what brought about the change.

He said he gradually became stronger and could eventually do things that had been difficult for him when he was younger.

After university and his national service, he found work that gave him greater control over his schedule. He explained that this flexibility allowed him to rest whenever he became tired while travelling to create content.

“If I got tired, I could sleep. Just pause,” he said.

Ameyaw suggested that being able to manage his time helped him cope with the demands of his work while continuing to build his career.
