“Stop Destroying The Image Of Ministry Of Foreign Affairs” – Koku Demands Dismissal of High Commissi
According to a report by Citi Newsroom on October 20, 2026, former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has called for the immediate dismissal of Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, following errors discovered in the records of Ghanaians evacuated from the country.
Anyidoho expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation provided by the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria regarding the discrepancies, arguing that the incident had raised concerns about the handling of official records and damaged the reputation of Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the former NDC executive described the Commission’s explanation as unacceptable and urged the relevant authorities to take decisive action. He maintained that removing the High Commissioner from office was necessary to address the concerns surrounding the incident.
His demand followed an admission by the Ghana High Commission that clerical errors had affected the records of 15 Ghanaian citizens evacuated from South Africa.
In a statement dated October 19, 2026, the Commission explained that the discrepancies occurred during the transcription of passport information. According to the explanation, some passport expiry dates were mistakenly recorded as the dates of birth of the individuals concerned.
The errors reportedly came to light after a data analysis identified unusual entries involving the payment of reintegration and transportation allowances. Some recorded dates of birth appeared to fall in the future, raising questions that prompted further examination of the information.
The High Commission acknowledged responsibility for the mistakes but maintained that the errors did not affect the identities of the evacuees, their participation in the evacuation exercise or their receipt of the approved financial assistance.
The Commission further clarified that the discrepancies affected 15 people out of the 1,964 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa. This represents a relatively small proportion of the total number of citizens involved in the exercise.
Despite the clarification, Anyidoho remains dissatisfied with the explanation and believes the incident warrants stronger action against the head of the diplomatic mission.
His demand has brought renewed attention to the standards of record-keeping and administrative accountability expected of Ghanaian diplomatic institutions, particularly when handling sensitive information involving citizens abroad.
The controversy also raises questions about the procedures used to verify personal information before financial assistance is processed and how administrative errors should be addressed.
While the High Commission has accepted responsibility for the discrepancies, Anyidoho’s call for dismissal represents his position on the matter. Whether the government will take disciplinary action against Quashie remains unclear.
For now, the incident continues to attract public scrutiny as attention focuses on the government’s response and the measures that may be introduced to prevent similar errors in future evacuation exercises.
