Somaliland Orders Undocumented Foreign Nationals To Depart Territory Within 10 Days
The Somaliland government has ordered all undocumented foreign nationals living in the territory to leave within 10 days, warning that those who remain after the deadline could face legal action.
The directive was announced on Monday by State Minister for Interior Abdirashid Mohamed Hassan, popularly known as Magaalo, during a press briefing in Hargeisa.
Magaalo said security agencies had been instructed to ensure that the order is implemented and to take appropriate action against foreigners found to be residing in Somaliland without valid immigration documents once the 10-day period expires.
“Illegal foreigners must leave the country within 10 days,” the minister said, explaining that the measure is intended to strengthen national security and maintain stability.
The government has also called on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting people suspected of living in the territory unlawfully. However, Magaalo warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that enforcement remains the responsibility of government institutions and immigration authorities.
The minister clarified that the directive does not apply to foreign nationals who are legally residing and working in Somaliland. Those with valid immigration permits and documentation, he said, have no reason to be concerned.
According to Magaalo, Somaliland is seeking to attract greater international attention and foreign investment, making a secure and stable environment important to its economic ambitions.
The announcement comes amid broader security and immigration concerns across the Horn of Africa, where governments have increasingly tightened border controls and immigration enforcement.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains without widespread international recognition. The territory operates its own administrative, security and immigration institutions.
Authorities have not yet disclosed detailed information on how the 10-day directive will be enforced or whether any additional exemptions will be introduced before the deadline expires.
