“Simphiwe Masilela Is Magical in the Number 10 Role at Orlando Pirates” – Benedict Tso Vilakazi

Vilakazi Impressed by Masilela’s Performances in Orlando Pirates’ Attacking Midfield Role

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Tso Vilakazi has praised Simphiwe Masilela for his impressive performances in the number 10 position, highlighting the youngster’s tactical awareness, movement and growing influence in the Buccaneers’ attacking play.

Masilela has been attracting attention for his contribution to Pirates’ offensive movements, with Vilakazi impressed by the midfielder’s understanding of the responsibilities that come with playing behind a lone striker. The youngster has also opened his goal-scoring account for the club, providing another encouraging sign of his development.

According to Vilakazi, one of the most important aspects of Masilela’s game is his ability to remain close to the striker rather than drifting too far away from the central attacking areas. This positioning allows him to combine effectively with the forward, create scoring opportunities and become more involved in dangerous situations around the opposition’s penalty area.

Vilakazi believes an attacking midfielder must understand when to move forward, how to connect with teammates and where to position himself to maximise the team’s attacking potential. He cautioned against players occupying the number 10 role spending too much time moving towards the wings without a clear tactical purpose.

Instead, the former Pirates star wants to see attacking midfielders maintain their connection with the striker and central areas, where their influence can be most effective.

Masilela has seemingly demonstrated these qualities, earning Vilakazi’s recognition for his movement and ability to remain involved in Pirates’ forward play.

Another important element of the youngster’s game is his ability to link the central midfielders with the attackers. This connection helps Pirates transition from midfield into dangerous positions while ensuring the forwards receive adequate support.

Vilakazi also acknowledged the importance of Masilela’s teammates, whose support allows him to operate more effectively in his attacking role.

For Pirates, Masilela’s continued development could provide valuable options in the final third as the club pursues its ambitions across competitions. His positioning, teamwork and tactical understanding will be crucial as he seeks to maintain his progress and establish himself further in the team.
