Sifuna Faces 2027 Dilemma as Allies Push Him to Challenge Ruto While Others Opine He Backs Kalonzo
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna faces a defining political dilemma as opposition leaders debate whether he should challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election or support a more experienced candidate.
The debate has intensified following Sifuna’s meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on October 20, shortly after the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader returned from the United States.
Sifuna led the Linda Mwananchi brigade to the meeting, which brought together several political figures, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
Gachagua welcomed the delegation and expressed optimism about political cooperation, raising expectations of further consultations between the two camps as opposition leaders explore possible alliances ahead of the next election.
The engagement comes as Sifuna’s supporters push for him to take a leading role in the presidential race, arguing that his growing political profile could provide an alternative to established opposition figures.
Wamboka, Owino, Natembeya and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi are among those who have backed Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. They have urged senior opposition leaders to consider supporting the Nairobi senator rather than pursuing separate candidacies.
However, other political figures have questioned whether Sifuna’s emerging political movement has the financial resources and nationwide structures required to mount a competitive presidential campaign.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka remains part of the wider debate, with some leaders favouring his extensive political experience and national networks as the opposition considers its options.
Political analyst Herman Manyora has argued that Sifuna’s political direction will depend largely on public support, while cautioning that popular enthusiasm alone may not sustain a presidential campaign.
With opposition leaders yet to settle on a joint candidate, Sifuna’s next political moves could influence coalition negotiations and the contest against Ruto in 2027.
