Pitso Mosimane Faces Welcome Selection Headache as Bafana Defensive Options Grow
Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane could soon have a welcome selection headache. South Africa’s growing pool of quality central defenders is making it harder to choose who gets into his squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Mosimane, who returned as national team coach in September 2026, has already seen the competition increase. In recent matches against Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt, several centre-backs have shown they are ready. Players such as Khulumani Ndamane, Lebone Seema, Olwethu Makhanya, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Ime Okon have all featured and done well. Their performances have given Mosimane real options in the heart of defence.
The list does not stop there. Mbekezeli Mbokazi is expected back after recovering from injury, adding more strength to the group. Aden McCarthy has also been catching the eye while playing for Sabah FK in Azerbaijan. He scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Borussia Dortmund, proving he can perform at a high level overseas. Rushwin Dortley of Kaizer Chiefs is another left-footed option who is working his way back from injury.
Experienced players remain in the mix as well. Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala continue to be reliable choices. Rushine De Reuck, who has done well for Simba SC in Tanzania, has also been recommended for a national team recall by his club coach. These veterans bring leadership and know-how that can help the younger defenders develop.
This depth is a positive sign for South African football. For years, Bafana Bafana has sometimes struggled to find consistent central defenders. Now Mosimane has a bigger group of players fighting for places. Healthy competition usually brings out the best in a squad. It forces every defender to stay sharp in training and perform well for their clubs.
Mosimane has started his second spell with three wins in a row. A strong defensive unit will be important as the team continues its AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. With more quality options available, the coach can rotate players, rest key men when needed and still field a solid backline. It is the kind of problem every national team coach hopes to have.
