OPINION: Kenya Might Head to a Political Earthquake If the Opposition Takes This Lineup in 2027
Kenya’s political landscape could witness a major shake-up ahead of the 2027 General Election if the opposition settles on a presidential lineup involving Rigathi Gachagua, Edwin Sifuna and Kalonzo Musyoka. Recent discussions between leaders associated with the three politicians have brought fresh attention to the possibility of a new political arrangement aimed at challenging President William Ruto.
The talks come at a time when opposition figures are exploring ways to unite their supporters and develop a common strategy for the next election. However, the possibility of such a lineup remains subject to negotiations, with no official presidential ticket announced.
On October 20, 2026, Gachagua reportedly hosted leaders linked to Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. The meeting focused on cooperation between the political camps and possible plans for the 2027 polls.
One of the key issues reportedly discussed was the timing of the decision on who should carry the opposition’s presidential flag. The leaders are said to have agreed to postpone the selection until next year, allowing more time for consultations and negotiations.
If the three politicians eventually work together, their partnership could bring different political strengths into one camp. Gachagua leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and has maintained a strong political presence in the Mount Kenya region, while Sifuna has become an outspoken figure in national politics through his association with the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Kalonzo, who leads the Wiper Patriotic Front, brings years of experience in opposition politics and an established political network. His participation in the negotiations could become important if the groups seek to agree on a common candidate and a formula for sharing political responsibilities.
The potential arrangement could also reshape conversations surrounding former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, whose name has featured in discussions about possible opposition presidential contenders. However, the latest talks do not establish that Matiang’i has been formally excluded from the 2027 race.
Gachagua has previously indicated that he would be willing to support Sifuna if the senator emerged as the preferred candidate. He has also suggested that he could consider becoming Sifuna’s running mate under an acceptable political agreement.
A united opposition could alter the dynamics of the coming election, but achieving that unity will require difficult compromises. The leaders must resolve questions about presidential ambitions, regional interests, party influence and the distribution of positions before any agreement can become a reality.
Whether the proposed lineup develops into a formal alliance remains uncertain. The decisions made over the coming months could nevertheless have a significant impact on opposition politics and the contest for State House in 2027.
