NPP Bono Regional Chairman Abronye Rearrested Weeks After First Bail
Kwame Baffoe, better known as Abronye DC, has reportedly been taken into police custody for the second time within a few weeks, following fresh allegations involving the publication of false information.
3News reported on, that the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was rearrested by the police over claims that he published information intended to cause fear and panic.
He has also been accused of engaging in offensive conduct considered likely to disrupt public peace. Following his latest appearance in court, documents show that he was granted bail set at GH¢1 million and required to provide two sureties.
The latest case comes less than a month after Abronye was previously arrested over allegations involving false publications and conduct capable of affecting public peace. He was released on bail in that earlier matter but has now returned to police custody following new allegations.
The repeated legal difficulties involving the senior NPP politician have generated considerable discussion among members of the public. The case has also renewed concerns about the consequences public figures may face when their statements are considered capable of creating unnecessary fear or tension.
Legal practitioners have noted that Ghanaian law treats the deliberate dissemination of false information capable of causing fear or disrupting public order as a serious matter.
As the case continues, Abronye’s lawyers are expected to challenge the allegations against him in court. The police have also reiterated their commitment to applying the law fairly and have called on politicians and other influential personalities to be responsible and careful with information they put into the public domain.
