Nigeria Confirms First Ebola Case in FCT as 44 Close Contacts Are Identified

According to a report by The Daily Post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a first case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been confirmed by the federal government, prompting calls for heightened public health awareness.

After a woman was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT after recently arriving in Nigeria from Uganda on an international flight, the case was confirmed by laboratories on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The patient had been admitted to the hospital for multiple days prior to the confirmation of the infection, as stated in the report. She is now undergoing treatment and has been placed in isolation.

Health authorities have started contact tracing to identify people who might have been exposed to the virus, according to Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

A total of forty-four close contacts have been located thus far. People associated with the patient’s travel, other patients, caregivers, and healthcare personnel all fall into this category.

Health officials in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) are collaborating, according to the federal government, to stop the spread of the infection.

Early detection of potential exposures and subsequent action to contain the disease are the goals of the response.

Nigerians should stay calm and take the necessary precautions to avoid contracting the virus, according to the authorities.

The public has been urged to wash their hands frequently and to notify the proper public health authorities if they experience any symptoms or suspect an exposure.

The government also wanted to remind people that the NCDC toll-free hotline is available around the clock at 6232 for anyone who needs information or wants to report a suspected case.

Health officials are currently attempting to determine the extent of potential exposure and prevent further cases by tracing contacts.
