National Apprenticeship Programme Hits 9,373 Enrolment, Trains 500 More Youth for Professional Jobs

The National Apprenticeship Programme has enrolled 9,373 young people against its initial target of 10,000, achieving over 93 percent of its goal, while an additional 500 young Ghanaians have been trained for professional employment.

Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale, disclosed this in an update on the progress of the flagship initiative, describing the figures as a strong indication that the programme is delivering on its mandate of equipping young people with employable skills. He explained that the 9,373 apprentices have been placed under experienced artisans and tradespeople across various sectors, where they are receiving hands-on training designed to prepare them for self-employment and the world of work.

According to him, the additional 500 beneficiaries were taken through specialised training to enhance their chances of securing professional employment, adding that the Agency remains focused on bridging the skills gap among the youth.

Basintale noted that although the programme fell slightly short of its 10,000 target, the level of enrolment recorded so far demonstrates growing interest among young people in vocational and technical skills development. He said the Agency is working to close the remaining gap and ensure that more young Ghanaians benefit from the initiative before the current phase of the programme ends.

The Youth Employment Agency boss further indicated that the programme is not only creating pathways to jobs but also reducing unemployment and empowering beneficiaries to contribute meaningfully to the economy. He urged young people to take advantage of the opportunities available through the Agency, stressing that skills acquisition remains one of the surest routes to sustainable livelihoods.

Basintale assured that the Agency will continue to strengthen partnerships with training institutions and employers to expand access and improve the quality of training delivered to beneficiaries. The National Apprenticeship Programme forms part of broader efforts by the Youth Employment Agency to tackle youth unemployment through practical, skills-based interventions across the country.
