In a letter dated Wednesday, October 21, Wamumbi wrote to the Committee of the Whole House Amendments to the Elections (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, seeking to amend Clause 10 of the Bill.
In his proposal, he moves that governors should not be allowed to run for senate immediately after serving their term in office.
“Notice is given that Eric Wamumbi intends to move the amendment that Clause 10 of the Bill be amended by inserting the following new paragraph after paragraph (c) by inserting the following new subsection immediately after subsection (2A)
“(2B) For purposes of election as a senator, a person shall not be registered as a candidate if the person has, at any time within 5 years immediately preceding the date of election, held office as a county governor,” the letter read.
Wamumbi reassured that he will follow up on the matter to ensure that it comes to fruition.
The MP’s proposal comes after several governors who have exhausted their Constitutional term limit of 10 years expressed interest in running for Senate in 2027, including Nyeri’s Mutahi Kahiga.
Other Governors that have been linked to the county’s senatorial seats include Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir, Kitui’s Julius Malombe, Narok County Chief Joseph Ole Lenku, Dr Hillary Barchok (Bomet), Nathif Jama (Garissa) and Tana River’s Dhadho Godana.
Currently, two former governors serve as senators: Uasin Gishu’s Jackson Mandago and Mandera’s Ali Roba.
Earlier, the National Assembly passed the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill. The principal object of this Bill is to amend the Sexual Offences Act, 2006 to provide for the promotion of national public awareness of sexual offences.
Further, the Bill mandates the Cabinet Secretary responsible for education to establish programs to safeguard, protect, and promote the right to education of victims of sexual offences, including victims of teenage pregnancies. Finally, the Bill provides for the definition of a cabinet secretary so as to align the Act with the Constitution.
