MK Party Rejects Godongwana’s Mini Budget, Calls Fuel Levy Cuts Electioneering
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has rejected the government’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), accusing authorities of introducing temporary fuel relief measures to gain political support ahead of South Africa’s local government elections on 4 November 2026.
In a statement released on 21 October, the party criticised Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s proposals, arguing that they do not adequately address unemployment, sluggish economic growth and persistent municipal service delivery challenges.
The MK Party questioned the timing of temporary fuel levy reductions, which are scheduled to take effect on 4 November and remain in place until 1 December 2026. The measures provide a R1.50-per-litre reduction for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel.
The party described the announcement as electioneering, although this remains its interpretation of the government’s decision.
It also highlighted unemployment and youth unemployment, citing figures of 43.8% and 47.4%, respectively, to support its call for stronger employment creation initiatives.
On local government funding, the party proposed doubling municipal allocations, including equitable share funding and conditional grants, arguing that municipalities need additional resources to improve services such as water provision.
The MK Party further criticised the revised economic growth forecast, reportedly lowered from 1.6% to 1.2%, and questioned the balance between debt repayments and spending on infrastructure, healthcare and small businesses.
The party concluded by rejecting the budget statement and calling for greater investment in public needs. Its criticisms reflect its position, while the government’s response remains unclear.
