Miguna Miguna Reminds Kenyans of Gachagua’s Past as Ruto’s Deputy Amid Opposition Alliance

Lawyer Miguna Miguna has reminded Kenyans of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political history under President William Ruto as the former deputy strengthens his position in the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The reminder brings attention to Gachagua’s political journey from serving in Ruto’s government to becoming one of the leading voices challenging the current administration following their public fallout.

Gachagua was elected Deputy President in August 2022 after running alongside Ruto under the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Their partnership helped the coalition secure victory with Gachagua playing a key role in mobilising support in the Mount Kenya region.

However, their relationship deteriorated as disagreements emerged over government policies, political representation and the direction of the administration.

The dispute eventually led to Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024,ending his tenure as deputy president.

Since leaving office,Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as an opponent of the government he once served.

Through the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP),he has built a political platform that allows him to mobilise supporters and work with other opposition leaders.

His growing involvement in opposition activities has placed him among the politicians seeking to challenge Ruto in the 2027 elections. He has also participated in efforts to bring opposition leaders together around a common political strategy.

Miguna’s reminder highlights the contrast between Gachagua’s former role in government and his current position in the opposition.

It also draws attention to the changing political relationships that have shaped Kenya’s political landscape since the 2022 elections.

The lawyer has previously criticised Gachagua’s leadership ambitions, questioning whether the former deputy president represents the kind of political transformation Kenya needs.

In July 2025,Miguna recalled their university years and criticised Gachagua’s historical political positions, arguing that his record did not demonstrate the change he believed the country required.

Gachagua’s political shift comes as opposition leaders continue to navigate alliances and competing presidential ambitions ahead of the next election.

Although several leaders have expressed interest in uniting against Ruto, questions remain over who will lead the coalition and how the different political camps will work together.

The debate surrounding Gachagua’s past therefore remains relevant as he seeks to establish himself as a major opposition figure after serving alongside the president he now opposes.
