Martha Karua, Ndindi Nyoro and Matiang’i’s Camp Reacts to Gachagua and Sifuna’s Meeting Yesterday
People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has called for unity among opposition leaders, saying they must eventually agree on one person to lead their campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Karua made the remarks as political discussions continue over who should carry the opposition’s presidential ticket against President William Ruto in the next election.
“Kina SIFUNA wako shughuli zingine lakini siku ya mwisho lazima tuchague mtu mmoja,” Karua said, stressing the need for the opposition to settle on a single candidate despite the different political activities taking place within its ranks.
Her statement comes as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna continues to build support through the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has attracted several politicians seeking a different political direction ahead of the polls.
Sifuna unveiled The Equitable Party (TEP) on October 4, 2026, and announced plans to rebrand it as the Linda Mwananchi Movement. His growing political profile has added another dimension to the ongoing discussions about the opposition’s presidential candidate.
Other leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, have also been mentioned in discussions surrounding the opposition ticket.
The different ambitions have raised questions about how the leaders will agree on one candidate without causing divisions within their political camps.
In earlier remarks, Karua called for a transparent and democratic process to determine the flag bearer. She has argued that the final decision should reflect the wishes of Kenyans rather than being made through private political negotiations alone.
The opposition has also faced calls to establish clear rules for choosing its candidate and resolving disagreements among its leaders.
With the 2027 election approaching, the pressure to settle on a common candidate is likely to remain a key issue in opposition politics.
Karua’s latest remarks underline the challenge facing the alliance as different leaders continue to pursue their political plans.
Do you think the opposition leaders will agree on one presidential candidate before the 2027 election?
