Dwight Yorke believes Ghana can make better use of its diaspora talent, pointing to Antoine Semenyo and Brandon Thomas-Asante as examples of the quality players born in the United Kingdom can bring to a national team.

The former Manchester United striker discussed the value of diaspora recruitment as he outlined his thoughts on the Black Stars, a team he has expressed interest in coaching.

Yorke believes the key is to identify eligible players, assess their quality and convince them to commit to the national team by presenting them with a clear vision.

The approach could be valuable for Ghana, whose strong links with the diaspora provide access to players developed in different football systems.

Yorke’s comments also reflect a wider international trend. According to the figures cited in The Guardian interview, 23.6% of the 1,248 players at the World Cup represented countries outside their place of birth.

Beyond recruitment, Yorke explained how he would manage the personalities in a dressing room. He favours setting clear standards and dealing with disciplinary issues privately rather than publicly humiliating players.

“Everyone starts equally,” he said, making clear that reputation would not guarantee special treatment.

Yorke also recalled advice from Pep Guardiola, who encouraged him to develop his own coaching identity rather than copy other managers. Having played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Yorke has experience of different leadership styles but believes a coach must find an approach that suits him.

The Ghana Football Association has yet to confirm a formal approach to Yorke as it searches for a permanent successor to Carlos Queiroz.
