Man Killed His Wife At Shoprite After He See’s Her Standing With Stranger Before He Attempt Suicide
Shoppers at the usually bustling Namakgale Shopping Complex outside Phalaborwa were left traumatised on Sunday afternoon when a domestic dispute escalated into a chilling act of violence inside a Shoprite grocery store.
According to police a 45-year-old man shot and killed his 40-year-old wife, injured a store manager who tried to intervene, and then turned the firearm on himself in full view of stunned customers. The incident unfolded shortly after midday, turning a routine shopping trip into a scene of chaos and terror.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that officers in the Mopani District have opened cases of two counts of murder and one of attempted murder following the deadly shooting. “Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect confronted his wife inside the store before drawing a firearm and firing multiple shots. When the manager attempted to de-escalate the situation he too was shot and sustained serious injuries. The suspect then turned the weapon on himself Ledwaba said.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but both the wife and her husband were declared dead at the scene. The injured manager was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in a stable but critical condition.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as shoppers scrambled for safety. I heard three loud bangs and saw people screaming and running towards the exits. It was like something out of a movie said one traumatised shopper. Others reported hiding in storage rooms and behind shelves as gunfire rang out.
The shocking incident has reignited debates around gender-based violence (GBV) and the availability of firearms in domestic disputes. Limpopo Community Safety MEC Florence Radzilani condemned the act describing it as a senseless display of toxic masculinity and violence that robs families communities and workplaces of innocent lives.
Counselling services have been made available to staff and customers affected by the ordeal. Shoprite Holdings, in a brief statement expressed condolences to the family of the victim and support for their injured employee.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including whether prior threats or protection orders had been reported.
For Namakgale residents the Shoprite grocery aisles will now forever carry the haunting memory of a Sunday that ended in bloodshed and sorrow.
