Malema Sets Strict Conditions For Joining Government Of National Unity Without Selling Out Principle
If right-leaning political groups like the Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus leave or are kicked out of the government, Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has said that his group is still willing to join the Government of National Unity.
During a door-to-door campaign drive in Soweto, Malema spoke to supporters and media representatives, stressing that the EFF is ready to be involved in government, but that it will not compromise its principles or core ideologies in order to get cabinet positions.
According to the head of the EFF, the present national executive is inherently unable to implement profound socioeconomic change because of the presence of conservative formations. According to Malema, his party is unable to co-govern with other political groups that are against basic structural reforms like the nationalization of important economic sectors and state-led land redistribution. He claims that the EFF and other parties that support free-market, capital-friendly policies would dilute the transformative agenda that is necessary to lift up marginalized communities and lead to ideological gridlock if they form an executive partnership.
According to Malema, the EFF is ready to negotiate entrance into the national administration if the political climate changes and the Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus leave the central coalition. He argued that the government could focus on pro-poor policies, job creation, public infrastructure investment, and aggressive service delivery if the executive branch was free from right-wing influence. Rather than viewing a run for office as a chance to enrich himself politically, he insisted that joining the government would be a chance to put state power to work for the benefit of ordinary South Africans.
While Malema did lay out the parameters under which the EFF would join a larger governance framework, he reiterated that winning clear mandates in democratic elections is and will continue to be the party’s top priority. He made it clear that the party will not compromise its principles, identity, or founding charter for short-term gain in the next election. If the party leader is to be believed, any aspiration for national executive positions must be in complete harmony with the movement’s extreme agenda goals, free from ideological compromises.
These comments are made in the midst of heated debates about the dynamics of coalitions and the need of ensuring long-term political stability in all levels of government. The EFF’s conditional willingness to participate in national executive governance exemplifies the changing tactics of opposition formations that aim to impact policy implementation while retaining their ideological identities, as major political parties get ready for forthcoming municipal contests.
