King Misuzulu Wants to Be Treated Like the President, or His Superior

A reported dispute over protocol involving AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and President Cyril Ramaphosa has put this year’s National Heritage Day celebrations in the spotlight, after the event was moved from KwaZulu-Natal to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

Government first announced that the 24 September celebration would be held at King Zwelithini Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal, alongside uMkhosi weLembe, the yearly Zulu event that honours King Shaka kaSenzangakhona. The programme was later moved to Oudtshoorn. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture said it had held talks with King Misuzulu and KwaZulu-Natal MEC Mntomuhle Khawula, and that government then decided uMkhosi weLembe should have its own day and its own stage.

Some reports say the disagreement was about the king’s role at the event. They claim there was a demand that he be the keynote speaker, with Ramaphosa speaking before him and introducing him. The same reports allege that the king’s camp threatened to bring in amabutho, or traditional regiments, if the demands were turned down. None of this has been confirmed in the government’s official explanation for the move.

The sudden change caused frustration in KwaZulu-Natal, where provincial authorities had already begun preparing for the national celebration. In the end, the national programme took place at Bongolethu Stadium in Oudtshoorn, and Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address.

The row shows how delicate the relationship can be between government and traditional leadership. Ramaphosa formally recognised Misuzulu as King of AmaZulu in 2022, in line with the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act. Traditional leaders play an important cultural and customary role, and the reported dispute shows how questions of protocol can quickly become sensitive, both politically and culturally.

For now, government has described the move as a decision to give uMkhosi weLembe its own platform. The reported tensions add another layer to the relationship between the Zulu monarchy and the state.
