Khanye Takes Aim at Kaizer Chiefs’ Junior Motaung, Says He’s Not Ready to Run the Club
Former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye has come out strongly against the way the club is being run under Kaizer Motaung Jr. He says Junior is simply not ready for the big job at Naturena and has given clear reasons for his view.
Khanye made it plain that he still has respect for Bobby Motaung, who used to handle the day-to-day running of the club. He described Bobby as a hands-on general manager who listened to the senior players and made time when problems came up. “When I was there, he was very involved,” Khanye said. “He is human and has his own personality, but when talking to someone, he would give them an honest ear. When I had issues, it was easy to speak to him.”
His main worry is about Junior’s ability to deal with people around him. Khanye said he played with Junior and is not sure he was ever ready to manage the team. “You have to be able to interact with the people,” he explained. “Can he listen to someone else’s opinion?”
Khanye also believes Chiefs need to treat their supporters the same way other big clubs do. He pointed to Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, who speak to their fans after every game. “Chiefs should be like that, the supporters are supposed to have a say,” he said. “It may not be the final word, but there is some advice they can give to the management. So, if those people are unhappy, there will be a problem.”
His solution is straightforward. He wants the club to bring in an outsider who gets a clear job and a set time to prove himself. “He can say, here is the job, I am giving you everything and we are giving you three years and we will judge you on your performance,” Khanye said. “I do not think Junior is ready to do that though.”
Khanye also questioned some of Junior’s recent calls. He raised the decision to bring in the current coach and the way the club handled Andile Jali when he became a free agent after playing overseas. He said Junior’s comments at the time showed arrogance. He was equally direct about the squad choices, saying the club released Thabo Cele but kept Sibongiseni Mthethwa. “I am not saying Cele was ‘wow’ at Chiefs, but he was better than Mthethwa,” Khanye said. “You can’t release Cele and leave Mthethwa. It means he was sacrificing. He needs to humble himself and bring someone to help him with player identification.”
The former player made it clear that he sees real problems with how decisions are being made and believes the club needs a different approach if it wants to move forward properly.
