Karua Takes a Swipe at Gachagua and His Allies for Calling Opposition Leaders Moles

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has taken a swipe at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies over their accusations of some opposition leaders of being government moles.

Speaking during during public engagements in Nakuru County on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Karua said those who found them in the opposition should not label others as moles.

The PLP leader defended the inclusion of leaders from different political backgrounds in the opposition, arguing that no individual or group should decide who is allowed to join the political camp.

“Some people found us in the opposition, and we opened the doors for them. Therefore, no one has the right to shut the door on anyone else,” Karua said.

Her remarks come as Nyoro is being branded as a mole by Gachagua and his allies like Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa. This is after he decided to take leadership of the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) rather than joining Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The Kiharu MP’s supporters have defended his decision, arguing that joining a different opposition party does not automatically make him an ally of President William Ruto’s administration.

They have also pointed to Gachagua’s own political choices, noting that after his impeachment as Deputy President in October 2024, he formed his own party instead of joining Jubilee which was a Mt Kenya party.

Gachagua’s camp had also previously labelled Jubilee a “red wheelbarrow”, suggesting that the party was an extension of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The latest remarks by Karua highlight the divisions within the opposition as its leaders seek to build a united front ahead of the 2027 elections while differing over party affiliations, political loyalty and who should be trusted within the coalition.
