It’s Out Of My Hands Now–Afenyo-Markin Distances Himself From Ken’s ReturnAs Matter Takes Legal Turn

Ghana’s Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has clarified his position on the much-discussed issue surrounding the anticipated return of “Ken,” explaining that the matter has progressed beyond his direct political influence.

Afenyo-Markin made the clarification following public discussions surrounding the State of the Nation Address (SONA). He explained that his earlier assurance regarding Ken’s return was based on the information and circumstances available to him at the time.

The lawmaker acknowledged that although his initial commitment was made from a political standpoint, the situation has since changed significantly. According to him, the matter has now entered the legal domain, limiting his ability to influence how it will ultimately be resolved.

He stressed that once an issue becomes subject to legal proceedings, politicians cannot independently determine its outcome. Instead, the relevant legal institutions must be allowed to handle the case in accordance with established laws and procedures.

His explanation comes amid growing questions about why the earlier expectation of Ken’s return has not materialised. By emphasising the legal nature of the matter, Afenyo-Markin appears to be clarifying that he does not have the authority to guarantee or personally determine the outcome.

The Minority Leader’s comments also highlight the distinction between political promises and legal realities. While politicians may make commitments based on the circumstances at a particular time, subsequent developments can make it difficult or impossible to fulfil those assurances, especially when legal processes become involved.

Afenyo-Markin’s position suggests that his earlier statement should be understood within the context in which it was made, rather than as a guarantee that he could personally secure Ken’s return regardless of subsequent developments.

His clarification also underscores the importance of respecting the independence of institutions responsible for administering justice. Although political leaders can express their views, advocate for individuals and participate in public discussions, they cannot dictate decisions that fall within the authority of the relevant legal bodies.

The issue may continue to attract attention within political circles, particularly among members of the Minority caucus and supporters seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding Ken’s anticipated return. However, Afenyo-Markin’s latest remarks indicate that any further progress will depend on the actions and decisions of the institutions handling the matter.

For now, the Minority Leader maintains that the circumstances have changed and that the issue must be resolved through the appropriate legal channels rather than political intervention.
