It’s dangerous and surprising – Bashiru Hayford questions Black Stars interim coaching appointments
Former Ghana coach Bashiru Hayford has criticised the appointment of the interim technical team for the Black Stars, describing the decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as “dangerous and surprising.”
Hayford expressed his concerns during an interview with Kessben FM, questioning the composition of the technical team selected to guide Ghana through the November fixtures in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The interim technical team is led by Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistant coaches. Former Ghana international goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeepers’ coach.
Explaining his position, Hayford drew on his international coaching experience, particularly his time in charge of Somalia’s national team.
“I was the first coach to lead Somalia to victory in an international match. I have come to realise that it’s not about where you are, but where you belong. The appointment of the Black Stars interim coaches is dangerous and surprising,” he said.
His comments come at a challenging period for the Black Stars, who have faced growing scrutiny over their performances and preparations for upcoming international competitions.
The interim appointments followed the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, leaving the GFA and the Sports Ministry under pressure to ensure stability within the national team while identifying a permanent replacement.
The interim technical team is expected to oversee the Black Stars during their November assignments as the search for a substantive head coach continues.
Hayford’s criticism has added to the debate surrounding the selection of coaches for the national team, with questions being raised about the experience, suitability and overall strategy behind the appointments.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to focus on preparing the team for its upcoming matches, with supporters hoping the interim arrangement will help improve performances and restore confidence in the Black Stars.
