Isiolo Governor Offers to Ditch UDA Ticket to Keep Rivals in Ruto’s Camp Ahead of 2027 Elections
Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has said he is ready to give up the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket and contest as an independent candidate if that would help keep his political rivals in President William Ruto’s camp ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The governor said he believes he can secure the ruling party’s ticket to defend his seat but urged his competitors not to allow disagreements over nominations to push them into joining the opposition.
Speaking to members of the public in Isiolo, Guyo maintained that the UDA nomination process should be free and fair, adding that leaders should consider the President’s re-election ambitions even as they pursue their own political interests.
“I am ready to seek re-election as an independent candidate if that will allow my challengers to remain in UDA and continue supporting Ruto,” he said.
Guyo appealed to his main competitors, including Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, former County Assembly Speaker Mohamed Roba, former Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and Sports Fund Chief Executive Officer Nuh Hajj, to remain in the President’s political camp despite their differences over local leadership.
The governor was elected in 2022 on a Jubilee Party ticket before leaving the party less than a year later to join UDA.
He also warned politicians against using Ruto’s name to pressure county security officials or influence local political disputes. According to Guyo, the President should not be drawn into minor grassroots disagreements, and leaders should avoid contacting security officers while claiming to act on his instructions.
Guyo further called on politicians to respect meetings organised by their opponents and avoid disrupting political gatherings. He urged leaders who disagree with rival camps to organise their own events instead of interfering with other people’s meetings.
Isiolo Woman Representative Mumina Bonaya raised concerns over allegations that some politicians were using police officers to advance their political interests. She said such conduct needed to be addressed to restore public confidence in the police service.
However, Isiolo County Commissioner Chaunga Mwachaunga maintained that the police service was independent and did not take instructions from people outside the institution.
The leaders urged politicians to conduct peaceful campaigns, respect the law and avoid actions that could create tension among communities as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
