How PSL Newcomers Milford FC Are Quietly Destroying Big Club Dreams
Milford FC coach Xanti Pupuma is determined to keep his team clear of late-season pressure following a strong and encouraging start to their debut campaign in the top-flight Betway Premiership.
Known as the Stallions, the KwaZulu-Natal club has accumulated 15 points from their first nine matches. Their only defeats so far have come against established South African football heavyweights Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, proving that the newcomers are fully capable of competing at the highest level.
Milford recently reinforced their position with a hard-earned 1-0 away victory over provincial rivals Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium. Siphosethu Ndlabi scored the decisive goal late in the second half, securing the club’s first away win of the season and lifting them into fourth place on the league standings, just one point ahead of Kaizer Chiefs.
Despite this early success, coach Pupuma remains grounded, emphasizing that a positive start means very little if the squad fails to sustain its high standards as the competition progresses. He explained that the club’s initial strategy focused on banking crucial points early to establish a comfortable cushion before the second round of matches begins.
Looking ahead, Pupuma views December as a vital checkpoint for the team. His immediate goal is to collect enough points before the end of the year to avoid entering the closing stretch of the season frantically fighting for results. He recognizes that competition naturally intensifies as teams battle for league survival and higher table finishes.
Reflecting on the squad’s mentality, the coach praised his players for their fearless approach, noting that their strong displays stem from genuine quality rather than simple luck. Having previously navigated a difficult relegation battle during the club’s earlier spell in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Pupuma believes those past challenges taught the squad valuable lessons in mental toughness and pressure management.
With the traditional safety benchmark for the division sitting around 30 points, Milford has already reached the halfway mark of that target with 15 points in hand. Securing safety early will allow the technical team and players to approach the remainder of the season with calmness and confidence. While supporters have plenty of reasons to celebrate this promising start, maintaining consistency will be the key factor if Milford hopes to turn their early momentum into a lasting success in the Premiership.
