Glenn Close has revealed she underwent ‘a complete hip replacement’ recently after sparking concern when using a cane to walk last week. The 79-year-old actress was seen Thursday on the red carpet using a cane as she attended a screening of the film La Bola Negra at New York City’s SVA Theater. Close took to Instagram on Tuesday and explained that she had to go in for surgery after her doctors told her that her ‘left hip was in really bad shape.’ The Fatal Attraction star said in the clip: ‘I wanted to just hop on and thank you for all of your love, and to explain why I have a cane – I have a cane because I have had a complete hip replacement.’ The Hollywood icon said that she’s using the cane as a stopgap measure, as she has a busy schedule coming up. They include a premiere for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in London, followed by a New York City premiere for All’s Fair’s second season.

‘My whole thing right now is to keep myself in running order,’ Close said, ‘so that I can really leap into whatever challenges come my way… so I’m hobbling around on a cane for now.’ The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Close for further comment on the story. ‘I hope to be fully present there, and maybe not running around going up mountains, but at least my old self,’ Close said of her upcoming appearances around the globe.

Close wrapped up in saying: ‘So love to everyone – don’t worry, I’m feeling great – I have my wonderful, wonderful family around me. ‘And I look forward to all the adventures coming, so love to everyone.’ Close said that she was wearing a frownie, which is a facial patch that smooths out wrinkles, adding: ‘Frownies help.’ She captioned the social media clip, ‘A needed explanation. Love to all.’ In La Bola Negra, Close played the role of Isabelle Durand for directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, who were honored for their work on the film winning Best Director at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

The eight-time Academy Award-nominee is also slated to get an honorary Oscar on November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom Ovation in Hollywood. Amid an upcoming busy schedule, Close took to Instagram this past August as she relaxed at her home in Montana, where she moved to in 2019. ‘Hi everyone, I’m home,’ Close said in the clip with stunning nature behind her. ‘I’m home, calming down. ‘Wearing my mama’s shirt, letting the wind blow through my white hair.’ She said she felt ‘blessed’ as she was ‘watching the sun go down’ on the summer night.
