Fernando Da Cruz Drops Bombshell Ahead of Kaizer Chiefs Crucial Friday Clash
Chiefs in Crisis: Da Cruz Sounds the Alarm as Amakhosi Face Must-Win Red Arrows Showdown
Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has admitted that his side must improve their attacking performance as Amakhosi prepare for a crucial CAF Confederation Cup second-leg encounter against Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday.
The Soweto giants suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against the Zambian outfit in Ndola on Saturday, leaving their hopes of progressing to the group stages of the continental competition under serious threat.
Malian midfielder Alassane Diarra proved to be the difference between the two sides, rising unmarked to head home from a corner in the 77th minute. His decisive goal handed Red Arrows a narrow advantage heading into the return fixture in South Africa.
For Chiefs, the defeat has increased the pressure on Da Cruz and his technical team, with the club desperately needing a response after a difficult run of results across all competitions.
Amakhosi have now gone four matches without a victory, following three consecutive draws in the Betway Premiership before their continental setback. The team’s recent struggles have raised concerns among supporters, particularly regarding its ability to turn attacking opportunities into goals.
Da Cruz acknowledged that Chiefs failed to create their usual number of chances against Red Arrows and admitted that tactical adjustments would be necessary if his team were to keep its qualification hopes alive.
“For sure we need to change something to create more chances,” Da Cruz explained.
“Normally we create a lot more chances in the PSL. This is the first time we have not created a lot and we need to analyse and change something to be able to qualify.”
His comments underline the urgency facing the Glamour Boys ahead of Friday’s encounter. Chiefs must find a way to unlock the Red Arrows defence while remaining defensively disciplined enough to prevent their opponents from extending their aggregate advantage.
Despite the mounting pressure, Da Cruz has called for unity within the club, insisting that players, management, technical staff and supporters must stand together during this challenging period.
“Most important in this period is that we must be together,” he said, expressing confidence that better results would eventually follow.
Meanwhile, Red Arrows coach Chisi Mbewe believes his team could have secured a more comfortable advantage after creating several opportunities in the first leg. He revealed that his players had targeted three goals but ultimately managed only one.
Mbewe has warned his squad against complacency ahead of the trip to Durban, stressing that mental strength will be essential.
Chiefs now face a defining evening at Moses Mabhida Stadium. With their continental ambitions hanging in the balance, Amakhosi must rediscover their attacking spark, show greater urgency and deliver a performance capable of keeping their CAF Confederation Cup dream alive.
