ECG to audit meters nationwide

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will soon begin a nationwide meter audit exercise to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.

The exercise will cover all ECG operational areas and involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring.

In a statement, ECG said the exercise was  intended to verify the integrity of metering systems and ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.

The company  also cautioned customers, landlords, estate managers, facility managers and security personnel against denying or delaying access to authorised ECG personnel on the grounds that they have not received individual notification letters.

ECG said the public announcement served as official notice of the exercise and that no further prior notices or appointment letters would be issued. However, the company  urged customers to verify the identities of personnel before granting them access to their premises.

It said all ECG employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official identification cards. Customers can verify the identity of field personnel by calling the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD verification code, available on all mobile networks.

To use the USSD service, customers are required to dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member. The staff member’s full name, region and district will then be displayed for confirmation.

ECG further cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant utility employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises, subject to the production of verifiable identification and compliance with the utility’s customer charter.

The company encouraged customers who require further information to contact its call centre or reach out through its official social media platforms under the handle @ECGghOfficial.
