ECG Announces Nationwide Meter Audit, Urges Customers to Cooperate With Authorised Staff
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to conduct a nationwide meter audit across its operational areas as part of efforts to improve billing accuracy, reduce commercial losses and detect electricity theft.
The exercise will involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid electricity meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring systems to ensure that electricity consumption is properly measured and customers are billed accordingly.
According to ECG, the audit forms part of measures to strengthen its monitoring systems, identify irregularities in electricity connections and improve revenue collection. The exercise is also expected to help the company identify faulty meters, unauthorised connections and other technical or commercial issues that could affect the accuracy of electricity billing.
As part of the announcement, ECG has indicated that the public notice will serve as official notification of the exercise. Individual customers should therefore not expect separate letters or advance appointments before authorised personnel visit their premises.
The company has urged customers, landlords, estate managers and property managers to cooperate with its personnel and avoid obstructing the exercise simply because they have not received an individual notification.
ECG has also drawn attention to Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020, which it cites in reminding customers of their responsibility to provide safe and reasonable access to utility personnel, subject to applicable procedures and proper identification.
However, the company has stressed the importance of verifying the identity of anyone claiming to be an ECG employee or authorised agent before granting access to their property.
According to the announcement, authorised personnel will carry official identification cards to enable customers to confirm their legitimacy before the inspection begins.
The company’s warning comes amid concerns about possible impersonation by individuals who may attempt to take advantage of utility-related activities to gain access to private properties.
ECG is encouraging consumers to remain cooperative and vigilant throughout the nationwide exercise.
