ECG Announces Nationwide Meter Audit to Combat Electricity Theft and Improve Billing
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to carry out a nationwide meter audit across all its operational areas as part of efforts to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue collection and tackle electricity theft.
The exercise will involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid electricity meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and their associated wiring. The aim is to ensure that electricity consumption is measured accurately and customers are billed according to the power they use.
According to the announcement, the meter audit forms part of ECG’s efforts to strengthen revenue assurance and address irregularities in electricity distribution. Such irregularities can include meter tampering, illegal connections and other practices that may result in electricity being consumed without proper payment.
The inspection of prepaid and postpaid meters is also expected to help identify faulty installations and discrepancies that could affect accurate billing. By checking meters and their wiring, ECG aims to improve the reliability of its metering systems and strengthen accountability among electricity consumers.
The inclusion of Special Load Tariff installations means that the exercise will also cover facilities operating under this electricity tariff arrangement. Verifying these installations will help the company assess whether metering and billing arrangements accurately reflect electricity consumption.
Electricity theft and commercial losses remain important challenges for power distribution companies because they can affect revenue, operational efficiency and the financial sustainability of the electricity supply system.
ECG’s planned nationwide exercise is intended to address these concerns by improving monitoring and ensuring that electricity supplied to customers is properly recorded and accounted for.
Customers are encouraged to follow official ECG announcements for information about the exercise in their respective areas and to cooperate with authorised personnel conducting legitimate meter inspections.
