Duduzane Zuma Warns Undocumented Immigrants: “Respect Our Laws or Leave”
Duduzane Zuma, First Deputy President of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, has told supporters that South Africans must take the coming local government elections seriously. He also said illegal immigrants living in the country must respect South Africa’s laws and its people.
Zuma spoke on Sunday at a mini-rally held at Mnini Sports Ground in uMgababa, south of Durban. Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue, many of them dressed in the party’s green colours, singing and dancing. The eThekwini mayoral candidate, Mxolisi Phakathi, was also there.
Speaking to the crowd, Zuma said voting is the main way ordinary people can change their own lives and the lives of their children. He described the elections on 4 November as the start of a longer road towards 2029, and he urged people to use the information they have and to spread the party’s message widely.
He also spoke about land, which he said gives people value and dignity. In his words, land is needed for homes, businesses, schools and farming, and returning land to the people is central to the party’s message. He linked this to other promises, including free education and state-run banks.
On immigration, Zuma had a message for undocumented foreigners, particularly those from other African countries. He said they must respect South Africa’s laws and its people, just as South Africans are expected to respect the laws of other countries when they travel. He added that people without the correct papers should leave.
The rally took place in a ward where two African National Congress members were shot dead while campaigning earlier in the week. The MK Party had cancelled a larger rally after party leader Jacob Zuma was admitted to hospital. Duduzane Zuma has said his father is undergoing routine medical checks and is not facing a serious crisis.
The party says it is aiming for a strong result in the elections and is not currently discussing coalitions. The gathering was part of ongoing campaign work in KwaZulu-Natal as voting day gets closer.
