Duduzane Zuma Sets Out MKP’s eThekwini Plans
Duduzane Zuma has outlined an ambitious vision for how the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) would seek to govern eThekwini ahead of South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections.
The MKP Deputy President and son of former president Jacob Zuma made the remarks during a wide-ranging roundtable discussion with IOL editors in Durban on Monday.
Zuma struck a firm and assertive tone during the engagement, focusing heavily on discipline, accountability and performance within local government.
He said the MKP would not tolerate a culture in which officials remain in senior positions for extended periods despite failing to deliver on their responsibilities.
According to Zuma, poor performance should have consequences, with leadership positions occupied by people who can demonstrate the ability to deliver services and meet the expectations of residents.
His comments come as political parties prepare for what is expected to be a closely watched contest for control of eThekwini, one of South Africa’s largest metropolitan municipalities.
The metro has faced a range of challenges, including concerns around service delivery, infrastructure, municipal finances, governance and public confidence.
Zuma presented these challenges as areas where the MKP intends to differentiate itself from established political parties.
The party, which has grown its political presence since entering electoral politics, has placed significant emphasis on expanding its influence in KwaZulu-Natal.
Its ambitions in eThekwini form part of a broader campaign to establish itself as a major force in local government.
During the discussion, Zuma also spoke against what he described as the retention of underperforming individuals in influential positions.
His approach places performance and accountability at the centre of the MKP’s proposed governance model.
The political landscape ahead of the local elections is already showing signs of intense competition, with established parties facing pressure to maintain their support.
The ANC, in particular, has been dealing with organisational challenges, including difficulties around candidate registration, while facing growing competition from opposition parties.
Zuma’s comments also come against the backdrop of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 2011 warning about the ANC potentially losing its dominant political position. His remarks have been repeatedly referenced in discussions about the party’s changing fortunes.
For the MKP, however, the immediate focus is on convincing voters that it can translate its political promises into effective municipal government.
With eThekwini expected to remain a major electoral battleground, Zuma’s comments provide an early indication of the issues the party plans to place at the centre of its 2026 campaign.
