Da Cruz Makes His Feelings Clear After Chiefs’ Defeat Extends Winless Run

Da Cruz Blames Pitch Conditions as Kaizer Chiefs Face Pressure After Red Arrows Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has pointed to the condition of the pitch at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium as one of the factors that affected his team’s performance during their 1-0 defeat to Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi suffered a disappointing loss in the first leg of their second preliminary round encounter in Ndola, Zambia, leaving them under pressure to overturn the deficit in the return fixture. The result also extended Chiefs’ winless run across all competitions to six matches, increasing concerns among supporters about the team’s current form.

Speaking after the match, Da Cruz explained that the playing surface made it difficult for his side to implement their preferred style of football. However, he praised his players for attempting to adapt to the challenging conditions as the game progressed.

“We were not given an advantage by the pitch. We did not have a good foundation upon which to build our game model,” Da Cruz explained.

The French coach added that his players had to adjust their approach to suit the circumstances, although changing their usual style was not straightforward.

Da Cruz also dismissed suggestions that Red Arrows had caught Chiefs by surprise with their energetic approach. According to the coach, his technical team had anticipated the Zambian side’s direct football, pace and frequent crosses into the penalty area.

He maintained that Chiefs were prepared for the challenge and believed his team had controlled much of the encounter despite failing to secure a positive result.

“We let in a goal from a corner, but we were in complete command of the game from that point on,” he said.

Despite Da Cruz’s assessment, Chiefs must now find a way to turn their possession and tactical approach into goals if they hope to progress to the group stage for a second consecutive season.

The return leg will be crucial for Amakhosi, who need a victory to keep their continental ambitions alive. With pressure mounting, Da Cruz and his players will be expected to deliver a stronger attacking performance and address the shortcomings that contributed to their defeat in Zambia.
