Bruno Fernandes Starts as Manchester United Name Lineup for Como Clash

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named in the starting lineup for the club’s UEFA Champions League match against Como on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

According to Manchester United’s official team announcement, head coach Michael Carrick selected Fernandes in the starting XI for the fixture at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in Como, Italy.

The Portuguese midfielder is set to captain the side as United seek a positive result in their European campaign.

The confirmed lineup puts Fernandes in an attacking midfield role behind forward Bryan Mbeumo, alongside Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are selected in midfield, while Senne Lammens starts in goal.

United’s starting XI consists of Lammens in goal; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in defence; Andrey Santos and Tielemans in midfield; and Fernandes, Mount, Cunha and Mbeumo in attack.

Carrick has made four changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday. De Ligt returns to the starting lineup after recovering from back surgery, while Mount and Cunha have also been recalled. Mazraoui comes into the defence following his return from injury.

De Ligt’s return is particularly notable, as the Dutch defender makes his first appearance for United since November 30, 2025. His inclusion offers the team another option in central defence as it prepares for the European fixture.

United will, however, be without several players. According to the club’s announcement, defender Leny Yoro is suspended following his red card against Atletico Madrid in the previous European match. Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven and Marcus Rashford are also unavailable, while Benjamin Sesko, Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu remain sidelined.

The substitutes named by Carrick include Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee, Karl Darlow and Tom Heaton, alongside several young players. This gives the manager additional options should changes be required during the match.

Both teams entered the fixture looking to improve their European results after recording one win and one defeat in their opening two Champions League matches, according to Football Italia’s pre-match report.

The confirmed team selection establishes Fernandes’ role in United’s plans for the Como encounter. The match is scheduled for Wednesday evening, with United hoping to secure a valuable result away from home.
