BRIEF: Tweet Predicting Chivayo’s Death Emerges, KRA Explains New Excise Duty Changes as Museveni Hails the Kenya-Dangote Deal

Good morning and welcome to our daily brief.

We start with the rather weird discovery of a tweet from last year that predicted exactly how Zimbabwe billionaire Wicknell Chivayo would die.

The post was published on May 8 2025 which is more than a year ago. It said that the business man would soon die in a plane crash and that he should be very careful with his life.

Interesting enough, that his how he met his death alongside his wife and four other aboard a chopper.

Moving on swiftly, KRA has moved to explain the new changes to exercise duty that affects, bottled water, fruit. vegetable juices and betting and gaming deposits.

Bottled water was among the products whose excise duty was completely removed under the changes.

For fruit and vegetable juices, the applicable rate depended on whether the products contained added sugar or sweeteners. Juices without added sugar retained an excise duty of Ksh14.14 per liter.

However, fruit and vegetable juices containing added sugar or sweeteners attracted a higher excise duty of Ksh20 per liter.

Finally, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has supported the Dangote Lamu Oil refinery project and insisted that his country will also build their own.

”We are going to build our own in Uganda. We had planned this long ago. We can’t change that,” Museveni said, explaining that Uganda has its own petroleum resources and needs refining capacity to serve its domestic market and parts of the region.
