Blame Dumsor In Ghana On Him, He is A Traitor – Kwesi Pratt Serves Strong Notice
Veteran journalist and Editor-in-Chief of The Insight,Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has criticised the decision tonameGhana’s main international airport after LieutenantGeneral Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, joiningthe debateover proposals to give the facility a new name.
During an appearance on Metro TV’s Good MorningGhana programme on Wednesday, February 26,2025,Pratt argued that Kotoka’s role in the 1966coup that removed Dr. Kwame Nkrumah from powerhadconsequences that continue to affect Ghana, including the country’s recurring electricity shortages.
The journalist claimed that Nkrumah had intendedto establish a large-scale nuclear power plant in1966to boost electricity generation. However, hemaintained that the military takeover disrupted theinitiative, preventing its implementation and deprivingthe country of a potential source of additional power.
Pratt therefore suggested that the historical eventssurrounding the coup should be consideredwhendiscussing the causes of Ghana’s continuingDumsor crisis. He placed part of the blamefor thecountry’s electricity difficulties on thedisruption of Nkrumah’s development agendafollowing theoverthrow of his administration.
Describing Kotoka as a traitor, Pratt urged PresidentJohn Dramani Mahama to pay attention to callsforthe airport’s renaming. He questioned why a figure hebelieves played a role in undermining Ghana’snationalsovereignty should be honoured through the namingof the country’s principal international gateway.
He further alleged that Kotoka opposed theintroduction of free education, arguing that hishistoricalrecord did not justify the recognitionhe currently receives.
Pratt also disclosed that he deliberately callsthe facility Accra International Airport, sayinghe is unwillingto participate in what he regardsas an inappropriate commemoration of theformer military officer.
His remarks have intensified discussions aboutGhana’s historical legacy, the consequences ofthe 1966coup, and whether public institutionsshould continue bearing the names of controversialhistorical figures.
