AVL 3-1 VIK: Match Review And Latest UEFA Champions League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Aston Villa secured an important 3-1 victory over Viking FK in their UEFA Champions League clash at Villa Park.

Aston Villa started the game on the front foot, controlling possession and putting the Norwegian visitors under pressure with their attacking play. Their efforts paid off in the 23rd minute when Ross Barkley rose well to head the ball into the net from Ibrahim Mbaye’s corner, giving the home side a deserved lead.

Villa continued to create chances, and they were awarded a penalty in the 36th minute after Zlatko Tripic fouled Alysson Edward inside the box. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, allowing Emiliano Buendia to step forward and calmly send the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-0.

Viking tried to find a way back into the contest after the break, but Villa remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. Their third goal arrived in the 62nd minute when Henrik Heggheim unfortunately turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with an attacking move from the hosts.

Despite trailing by three goals, Viking refused to give up and continued searching for a consolation goal. Their persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when Peter Christiansen produced an excellent left-footed volley from Kristoffer Askildsen’s cross, giving the travelling supporters something to celebrate.

However, Villa remained composed during the closing stages and held on to their advantage until the final whistle, finishing the match with 53 per cent possession and a valuable victory.

With the crucial win, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa climbed to second place on the UEFA Champions League table, level on points with leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while Viking FK dropped to 33rd position following their defeat.
