UEFA Champions League, League Stage – 3 Aston Villa AST 3 – 1 Full Time Viking VIK Venue Villa Park Referee Sebastian Gishamer Ross Barkley 23′ Emiliano Buendía 37′ (Pen) Henrik Heggheim 62′ (OG) Peter Christiansen 84′ Aston Villa made it three wins from three in the Champions League with a comfortable 3-1 win over Norwegian side Viking at Villa Park.

Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendia scored in the first half before a Henrik Heggheim own goal extended the hosts’ advantage, although Peter Christiansen pulled one back late on.

Unai Emery’s side controlled the opening stages and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Barkley met Ibrahim Mbaye’s corner with a glancing header into the top of the net.

Buendia wasted a golden opportunity to double the advantage shortly afterwards, heading over from close range after Alysson had picked him out.

The Argentine was then denied by goalkeeper Arild Ostbo, who produced a fine save from another header.

However, Buendia made amends in the 37th minute after Alysson was fouled by Zlatko Tripic inside the penalty area.

Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Buendia calmly converted into the bottom corner.

The goal made him the first Aston Villa player to score in four consecutive European appearances.

Viking offered little going forward during the first half, with Villa registering 14 shots and 1.98 expected goals before the interval.

The visitors improved after the restart, with Tobias Moi testing Zion Suzuki before Tripic forced the goalkeeper into another save.

However, Villa added a third in the 62nd minute when Alysson raced into the penalty area and delivered a low cross that Heggheim diverted into his own net.

Viking continued to threaten, with Suzuki tipping a powerful effort from Jesper Daland over the crossbar.

Christiansen eventually reduced the deficit in the 84th minute, meeting Kristoffer Askildsen’s cross with a first-time volley. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision.
