Arsenal and Napoli tracking 21-year-old Serie A goal-scoring talent
According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Arsenal are monitoring Monza striker Gustavo Varela following his impressive start to life in Serie A, with Napoli and his former club Benfica also reportedly interested in signing the 21-year-old forward.
Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Arsenal are tracking Varela after his prolific performances since joining Monza from Benfica during the summer transfer window.
The Portugal Under-21 international has made an immediate impact in Italy, scoring six goals in his first six Serie A appearances and eight in seven matches across all competitions.
Varela continued his impressive form in Monza’s 4-0 victory over Cagliari on Monday, scoring twice and providing an assist for Southampton loanee Jay Robinson.
His performances have attracted interest from several clubs, with Napoli emerging as serious contenders to sign him ahead of the 2027 transfer window.
According to the report, several of Italy’s leading clubs are also monitoring the striker as his reputation continues to grow following his impressive start to the season.
However, Arsenal could face competition from Benfica, who are reportedly considering bringing their former player back to Portugal.
Portuguese publication Record reports that Benfica have a buy-back clause allowing them to re-sign Varela for €9.5 million, approximately £7.96 million, at the end of the season.
The reported clause could give Benfica a significant advantage in the race for the forward, particularly given his rapid progress since leaving the club.
Monza paid €2.5 million, around £2.1 million, to sign Varela from Benfica in late July. The agreement reportedly also includes a 20 per cent sell-on clause in favour of the Portuguese side.
Arsenal’s reported interest comes as the Premier League champions continue to assess potential attacking reinforcements for the future.
Varela’s goalscoring record and age could make him an attractive prospect for the Gunners as they consider their long-term options. However, no agreement with Arsenal has been reported, and competition from Napoli and Benfica could complicate any potential move.
